Hinckley Golf Club

The Council 2019

Club Captain

Sarb Matharu

I joined Hinckley golf club in 2005 after much encouragement from the Hinckley Golf Club Social Sec. John Neave. As a keen sportsman from my early years, playing semi-professional squash and having football trials for both Aston Villa and Leicester City, I enjoyed nothing more than the challenge of testing myself in different sporting activities. As a result, golf has now become my sporting passion.

I became the club’s Handicap Secretary in 2011 after requesting an explanation about a decrease in my handicap and was promptly asked if I would like to become the handicap sec! I am proud of the work of volunteers to continually improve the club; for example – as a competitions committee - we have established the criteria so that handicaps are managed in a fair manner according to the England Golf Union criteria.

I will relish the challenge of Captain and try to fulfil my role with the same commitment and enthusiasm as our past Captains, who have contributed so much to the life of the club.

I have now been a member of Hinckley Golf Club for over 20 years and have served on the Social Committee and been a regular player for the C Team.  I get great enjoyment from following our 1st Team and County Teams for both their home and away matches where I am commonly known as 'The Flag Man'.

To find out why please come and join me in supporting our teams, I hope to see you soon for some fun summer evenings.

I first came acquainted with golf at a young age, as my parents both played at Burbage Common Golf Club. After 20 years of playing hockey for Nuneaton Town, seven years in the first team, it was time to slow down. That’s when I started car racing and travelled round the UK circuits competing in the Classic Touring Car Club, winning a national championship in 2008.

I had my first rounds at Hinckley Golf Club in the late 80’s. I joined the club in 1993 at a time when there was a waiting list, joining fee, 5 day membership only and then another waiting list for full membership after acquiring a handicap.

During my 25 years at the club, I have played for many C team captains and had the privilege of being C Team captain myself in 2000/01. It’s a great team to play in and a must for us higher handicappers. I also play in the mixed section with my wife Breeda, help out the social team and you may even see me mowing the grass or altering and improving various projects around the club.

We have a great club, and it’s a privilege to be asked to go through the various offices up to Club Captain.

I wish Sarb all the best in the coming year and I hope you all enjoy your golf and the social events throughout the season.

Golf Development Director

I have been a member of the club for around 20 years. My main role is to look after the development of players whether that be Juniors, Ladies, Men or Club members. I work as an IT Manager in the world of Commercial Insurance and this brings many years of experience in commercial management to the club, which in the main is run by volunteers. One of my main aims over the next 3-5 years is to grow the grass root side of the golf club, taking Juniors as young as 5 through to 18 and letting them experience, and where possible develop, their golfing skills and become valued members of the club.

Seniors Captain

Mike Kirby

Having lived near the Golf club since 1983 I became a social member then eventually had the time to become a full member, playing as much as work allowed. Since retirement I have regularly played in the seniors and will continue to support and encourage our members to enjoy the games and have fun.

I began playing golf in 1986 and joined HGC in 1991 when my playing partner (my neighbour) left the area. At the same time my firm decided to move my office base to London whilst I worked across the Midlands and the Northern counties. I managed to play about 4 times a year and decided in 1999 to become a social member. I reverting to 5-day membership when I retired at the end of 2009 and then re-joined as a 5-day member and very much enjoy my “social golf”. Over the past few years I have helped out with some minor financial matters until I was “encouraged” to take on the role of Honorary Secretary in mid-2018.

Council meetings are also attended by the following invitee's:
