Hinckley Golf Club

The Council 2020

Club Captain

Chris Lester

I had my first rounds at Hinckley golf club in the late 80's, and I joined the club in 1993, at a time when there was a waitng list to join, a joining fee, five day memebrship only, and then a waiting list when you acquired a handicap for full membership.

During my 28 years at the club, I have captained the C-Team on two occasions and been Vice-Captain four times. I also now play in the mixed section regularly with my wife Breeda, and I enjoy helping out with the social team.

We have a great club and it has been a privilege to be asked to become Mr Captain. I have helped with the competitions and handicaps committee, worked with all the other council members in running the club, and i am now relishing the challenge of House and Grounds Officer.

I have enjoyed my year as Vice-Captain, and will dive head-first into my new role. So, I hope you will all have a great year golfing and support the social team throughout the year along with Breeda and myself.

The main sporting interest of my youth was football, where I was generally considered to be a player of high skill, competing at a good local level for many years. In my early 30s, I became a football coach, and managed my team until my mid 30s, when I felt I needed another sport to invest some time in.

It was then that I took up golf, joining Longcliffe Golf Club in the late 70s. When I moved to Stoke Golding in '82, I also moved clubs, joining Atherstone Golf Club, where I enjoyed 2 years before joining Hinckley, a developing club that I believed had much potential! A belief I am happy to say has since been and continues to be proven.

During my time as a member at Hinckley Golf Club, I have been Seniors Captain, but my main claim to fame, and something which I am very proud of, is being crowned County Seniors Foursomes Champion along with Dr Richard Brittain!

Looking forward, I see the club as a very sound footing. We have an excellent General Manager in Helen Wilebore, a stunning course thanks to our diligent Greens Team headed by Adam Castle, and a new and exciting Professional in Steve Baxter, ably assisted by Amy Taylor. In the clubhouse we have our catering team led by Paul Leary, Neil Temple, and now also Sally Crossfield. So I am, as are many others, very optimistic about the future of Hinckley Golf Club, I am thrilled to be your President for this season.

Golf Development Director

Steve White

I have been a member of the club for around 20 years. My main role is to look after the development of players whether that be Juniors, Ladies, Men or Club members. I work as an IT Manager in the world of Commercial Insurance and this brings many years of experience in commercial management to the club, which in the main is run by volunteers. One of my main aims over the next 3-5 years is to grow the grass root side of the golf club, taking Juniors as young as 5 through to 18 and letting them experience, and where possible develop, their golfing skills and become valued members of the club.

Seniors Captain

Mike Kirby

Having lived near the Golf club since 1983 I became a social member then eventually had the time to become a full member, playing as much as work allowed. Since retirement I have regularly played in the seniors and will continue to support and encourage our members to enjoy the games and have fun.

Lady Captain

Breeda Lester

My real sporting passion for years was badminton, playing for clubs in Hinckley, Nuneaton, Solihull & Coventry, enjoying matches and the social side of the game.  When Chris, my husband, gave me a voucher for lessons at Hinckley Golf Club I went along with the same enthusiasm.

I joined the club in 2011, and from 2017 (upon retiring) I was able to fully enjoy the matches and comradeship of the Ladies Section.  After tough years and perseverance my game has finally improved.  Hinckley GC is very welcoming and being a new lady to the area and golf, I have made many good friends and golfing partners.  The away games and mixed section matches have introduced me to new courses and acquaintances.

I am currently Ladies' Match Secretary for Friendly and Handicap games, I play in the Mixed Section and help the Social Team.

The Ladies Section at Hinckley gets it's strength from the extensive work which is undertaken by teams and individual ladies who have taken responsibility for competitions and events.  It's a great honour to become Lady Vice-Captain and I look forward to continuing my work with the committee members and that network of teams and individuals.  I will do my best for everyone to enjoy their golf and the social aspect of the game.
